Description:
textured paper; ō-ban; rightmost panel of triptych; nishiki-e; bijinga

Label Text:
Signed 'Yoshū Chikanobu' at middle right margin above the accompanying artist's seal in red. This print is the rightmost panel of a triptych, which comes from a series of imagined portraits of ladies in the inner palace of Chiyoda Castle. In this scene, the courtesan is turning the wheel of fans to dry the woman in the middle panel (AC 2005.171), who has just emerged from the bath. Issued from 1894–1896 by Fukuda Hatsujirō, a publisher located in Nihonbashi, Edo, the series was later followed by a complementary series of triptychs of Chiyoda's outer precincts ('Chiyoda no on-omote') beginning in 1897.
