Description:
New Mexican retablos of the 18th-19th century were commonly created from water-based paints (colored with native dyes) and wood (pine). Saint James, the patron saint of horses, is painted here on horseback. He was thought to lead the military conquest against the Moors, who occupied Spain in the 800s. He is associated with warriors and battle. This retablo, painted in red and black, displays a hole at the top, where the item would have been displayed on a wall inside a home. AP2018
