This is a two volume set, containing one hundred eight etchings and eleven etched initial letters. Volume I includes six headpieces and six initial letters, fifty one mixed etchings hors texte of which thirty six are signed on the plate Chagall, M. Chagall, or Marc Chagall. Volume II includes five headpieces and five initial letters, forty six mixed etchings hors texte, forty one of which are signed on the plate Chagall or M. Chagall. An illustrated table of etchings is included in the collation. The composition and printing was completed under the direct supervision of George Arnoult. Ambroise Vollard commissioned the illustrations in 1923. One Hundred hors texte plates, an illustrated table of plates and a set of headpieces were executed between 1923 and 1927. The book remained unpublished at Vollard's death in 1938. In 1948 Teriade issued the book using ninety six of the original etchings (one printed twice as the frontispiece and plate XX in Volume I), with initial letters and new headpieces executed in 1947, the original headpieces having been lost.
