Label Text:
This print is signed at lower right "Toyokuni ga" ('drawn by Toyokuni') in the red toshidama cartouche. Immediately above the signature are the circular aratame seal of the censor and the accompanying date seal, which gives an inspection date of the tenth lunar month of 1856 (Ansei 2). Below the signature is the mark of publisher Iseya Kanekichi, who was located in Kyōbashi, Edo. In the yellow cartouche at upper-right, the name of the character "Ise no Saburō Yoshimori," a warrior and retainer of Yoshitsune, who appears in many kabuki plays, most notably "Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees" ('Yoshitsune senbon zakura'). The play here has been identified thanks to another impression in the collection of Waseda University, Tokyo (acc. no. 101-5618).
