Label Text:
In numerous visits between 1993 and 2011, John Willis photographed the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) living at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Among his subjects were Vern Sitting Bear, Eugene Reddest, and Victoria Chipps—all of whom witnessed a lifetime of conflict over land rights and governance. His 18-year series shows a view of contemporary life on the Reservation, which is continually threatened by US policy. Today Pine Ridge remains the poorest reservation in the United States. Unemployment is over 80% and the rates of mortality, suicide, depression, and alcoholism more than double those anywhere in the country.
