right panel of a vertical ōban triptych; bijinga; fūkeiga; nishiki-e

Label Text:
This print is signed "Toyokuni ga" ('drawn by Toyokuni') at lower-right. To the left of the signature is the seal of publisher Maruya Jinpachi, the character "jin" within a circle. The series title is printed at top-right within the red cartouche. To the upper-right of the artist's signature is the circular nanushi seal of censor Muramatsu Genroku (active ca. 1843–1846), which has been used to date this impression.

While on this panel the signature is difficult to differentiate from that of Utagawa Toyokuni II, the left panel of the triptych is signed "Ichiyōsai Toyokuni ga" ('drawn by Iciyōsai Toyokuni'), a name employed by Kunisada from 1844–1861, and has thus been used to narrow further the possible dates of production.
