Description:
hosoban; yakusha-e; benizuri-e

Label Text:
A hosoban ('narrow format') sized benizuri-e print, most likely from a triptych or polyptych. The actor Segawa Kikunojō III is today better known as Segawa Senjo (1751–1810) of the Hamamuraya guild. He adopted the name Kikunojō III from 1774 until 1791; however, his first female role did not come until 1784. This print is signed at lower left 'Enshi ga,' or 'drawn by Enshi." Segawa Kikunojō's name is written vertically descending on the viewer's left of the figure.
