Description:
Powder horn inscribed: “AARON . FOOT . HIS . HORN . MADE / AT PENNSYLVANIA. Decemb-r 27 AD 1776 / American / HESSIAN / RP.” Aaron Foot’s Connecticut company fought at the Battle of Trenton after crossing the icy Delaware with Washington on December 25, 1776. This horn, done in the manner of Jacob Gay, is rare for depicting a specific event during the Revolution. Today, McKonkey’s Ferry is known as Washington’s Crossing, Pennsylvania, and the vignette depicts Americans chasing retreating “Hessian” soldiers in “Pennsylvania” back and forth across the Delaware River following the Battle of Trenton. Among the most beautifully carved horns from the Revolution, the lettering is neat, shaded, and well planned, with features such as a large moose.
