Description:
right panel of a vertical ōban triptych; musha-e; nishiki-e

Label Text:
The partial title of this print appears at upper-right within the red cartouche. The first portion, identifying this as the Battle of Rokuhara from the epic literary work "The Taiheiki" appears in a multi-colored cartouche on the left panel. Likewise, this panel bears no publisher's seal, which is also found at lower-left of the left panel. This panel is signed at lower-right "Gountei Sadahide ga" ('drawn by Gountei Sadahide'). Immediately to the left of the artist's signature is the seal an as-yet unidentified blockcutter named Koizumi. This print can be dated via the circular combined date-aratame seal of the censor, visible to the immediate upper-left of the narrative inscription, which indicates a date of inspection as the second lunar month of 1859 (Ansei 6).
