This triptych depicts a battle scene near the Yalu River, which divides China from North Korea, and the city of Yizhou, which is located in present-day North Korea; this scene is believed to have occurred on April 4, 1904. This date is supported by the dates of preparation and printing, April 9, 1904, and April 12, 1904, respectively, which can be found in the publisher's seal at lower-left of the left panel. This print is signed immediately right of the publisher's seal "Ōju Yonihide e" ('a picture by Yonehide by special request') and includes the artist's seal in red, which reads "Gosai no in." There is also light embossing in the clouds of smoke.
While this print purports to be an accurate rendering of a battle during the Russo-Japanese War, it is actually a copy (with only slight variations) of an earlier design by Migita Toshihide of a scene from the Sino-Japanese War, executed ca. 1894–1895 (Boston MFA 2000.134a-c and 2000.205a-c).
