vertical ōban triptych; nishiki-e

Label Text:
This triptych is unsigned and bears no identifying marks. Written in the lower-right of the right panel is the number 7. The date of publication has been determined by by the battle depicted: the Battle of Port Arthur which occurred February 8–9, 1904.

The narrative inscription, printed in the purple and white cartouche at upper-right of the right panel has been transliterated and roughly translated below:

"Nihon kantai shōri: waga rengō kantai ryojunkō ni rogokukantai to daigekisen no goteki no saidaisentōkan no sūsei o gekichinsu"

"A Victory for the Japanese Armada: At the great and fierce battle in Port Arthur, our united armada sinks the boats of the last remaining great warship of the Russian armada."
