Label Text:
While this impression maintains no publisher's marks, owing to extensive trimming for its inclusion in this album, another edition at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University (1944.5.22), bears the mark of Matsunaga Sakujirō (firm name Shōgetsudō) along the left margin of the left panel, which dates the Harvard example to 1894. This version, however, shows distinct variation in coloring, especially with the application of the opaque white ink used for the snow, indicating that it, like so many other examples in this album, was likely published slightly later in a deluxe format, possibly even after the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese War in 1895. With no surviving publisher's marks and no other known versions of this edition, however, a definite date cannot yet be established. - BB, 2014
