Label Text:
The Boston MFA has two other versions of this print, which constitute different editions and states based on the variant coloration and placement of the title cartouche (2000.57a–c and 2000.56a–c). While this impression shows significant trimming to the margins — necessary for its inclusion in this album — one of the Boston impressions maintains the publisher's mark of Sawamuraya Seikichi (firm name Seieidō) along the left margin of the left panel, which gives a firm date of 1895. Like many of the other designs in this album, however, it is possible that this version was printed slightly later, even after the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese War, as part of a special edition intended specifically for binding in an album, hence the lowering of the central title cartouche within the picture frame. - BB, 2014
