Label Text:
This design, in its original edition and state, was published by Fukuda Hatsujirō (active ca. 1894–1939, firm name Gusokuya) in 1895 (see Boston MFA 2000.186a–c). This version was likely published later, possibly even after the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese War explicitly for the inclusion in this album. The original title, for example, has been moved down into the picture frame, indicating that uniform size of paramount importance for this edition and state. Likewise, the coloration in this example is slightly different, with more dramatic use of gradated halftones, especially the pink in the horizon line on the left panel. - BB, 2014
