Description: Tall silver cann with rased, bellied body, an applied molded base and rim, and attached cast handle with a foliate thumbpiece with c-scroll and reverse C-scroll, which is marked "REVERE" twice with a centerpunch in the middle of the base for Paul Revere, Jr. (1735-1818) of Boston. The cann is inscribed in script, "The Gift of / Deacon Ebenr. Hunt / to the Church of Christ / in / Northampton / 1788" engraved on front within an oval cartouche of alternating dots and crosses with a bow. A hatter and general trader in Northampton, Deacon Ebenezer Hunt (1703-1788) married Elizabeth King (1703-1788) in 1730. The church records of the First Churches of Northampton list this object: "1788 Deacon Ebenezer Hunt of Northampton by his last will gave to the Chh a silver cup containing a quart. also three acres of Meadow Land to be applied to the use of the poor of the church by the Deacons forever." Also in Church Records, Book 1, p. 37: "At Chh meeting held April 6, 1788 to receive the Legacy which Deacon Ebenezer Hunt, deceased, gave to the chh of Northampton- Dr. Hunt moved that the Deacons be a Committee... survive the Silver Cup inter upon the prospect of land and discharge hime... The chh voted the Deacons be a committee for that purpose..."
