Label Text:
In 1931, French traveled to Europe with Paul Cadmus, a fellow student at the Arts Students League who became French's lover and would remain a lifelong friend. After making pilgrimages to see the work of old masters in France and Spain, French and Cadmus settled into a studio in Puerto de Andraitx, a village on the Spanish island of Mallorca, where they stayed until 1933. French's work from this period reflects his environment; he adapted the style of American scene painting to his subjects--the local people and landscapes. The Mead holds numerous sketches that French made of the architectural scenery of Puerto de Andraitx, like those seen here, in addition to preparatory sketches for some of his paintings of this era.
