Label Text:
Barnet’s haunting portrait depicts his older sister Eva staring out a window of their family home, hands to her face. This painting, acquired by the Mead as a gift from the artist, is part of the series My Father’s House. Barnes began the series after visiting Eva, who lived in the house alone. He realized she was constantly seeing the ghosts of her past—father, mother, sister, and brothers—as if it were present for her. Barnet explained that his challenge was “to paint something that is no longer there.” So he did.
