This print is one of roughly twelve prints of the Russo-Japanese war executed by Kiyochika and printed by Inoue Kichijirō. The print is signed "Kiyochika" at middle-left of the left panel in black, with two artist's stamps in red, which read "Kiyochika" and "Kobayashi." The title of the print is printed in large text at upper-right of the triptych, followed by an inscription describing the capture of Liaoyang, an important victory for the Japanese Imperial Army, which reads "Our Japanese Army Captured the Enemy Fort after Fierce Assault Day by Day, Night after Night, from September 1, and occupied Liaoyang in the morning of September 4, 1904. Other versions of this print (e.g. Boston MFA 2000.76a-c) are dated to October 5, 1904, owing to the publisher's inscription, which is elsewhere printed vertically descending in red along the left margin of the leftmost panel. Here, however, it is absent. The most notable difference is the presence of a number at lower-right on the right panel, which here reads "33," indicating that this print could be a re-issue or special edition released as part of a set. Other works from this series about the Russo-Japanese War are in the Mead's collection. Though by various artists, they are all similarly numbered.
