Label Text:
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Parrish decided to pursue a career as an artist in 1877, after a trip to Europe, rather than enter his father’s coal business. He became a student of Peter Moran, an established professional printmaker, in 1879. Within four years, he made eighty-six etchings, and in 1884, he published a catalogue of his prints. Parrish was a member of the New York Etching Society and the Philadelphia Society of Etchers, and continued to make etchings throughout the 1880s. The sketchy image at the lower left is a remarque and suggests the influence of French etchers. There were just thirty images pulled from the plate with the remarque, a sign of rarity. The Mead has additional etchings by Parrish depicting his summers spent in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
