Description: Small pearlware punch bowl with underglaze cobalt blue painted decoration. The well of the bowl inscribed "Urge no / Healths," and further decorated with blue painted double bands along the rim and midsection of the bowl's interior. A small section of the painted double bands on the interior rim has "bled" or "run," and was likely caused by firing the bowl at too high of a temperature in the kiln. The exterior of the bowl decorated with similiar blue painted double bands along the rim and base, just above the footrim. The bowl is in excellent condition with the exception of a single small chip on the underside of the footrim. The phrase "urge no healths," is believed to have been taken from King Charles I's "Twelve Good Rules," and discourages the pratice of drinking to excess by offering numerous toasts to people's health. This is an unusual phrase to find on a punch bowl - usually the sayings encourage drinkers to consume more alcohol - such as "One bowl more and then," "Drink round," "Pass the bowl." etc..
