Description:
Woman's black silk velvet muff with self fabric gathered decoration. Muffs were an intergral feature of cold-weather fashions for women for centuries, providing an elegant way to warm and protect the hands. The use of velvet in this example shows that their function was largely decorative by the early 20th century.
