Description: Porter was a dark brown bitter beer brewed from malt partly charred or browned by drying at a high temperature. The drink was developed in London in the 18th century, and was very popular throughout England. Thrown mug; cylindrical body with applied handle; covered entirely with a yellow glaze; decorated with overglaze black enamel and silver luster; painted with a thick silver band along the upper rim of the mug, and a narrower silver band just above the base of the mug; sunburst in silver luster on both sides of the mug; painted silver luster circle, within which is a transfer printed rococo cartouche; the cartouche decorated with images of a beer mug, a pair of pipes, drinking glasses, and a bowl; the cartouche further embellished with the phrase “SUPER FINE / PORTER / PEACE and ROAST BEEF to the FRIENDS / of LIBERTY”; the underside of the mug is a single white label which reads “L247 / Canary / Porter Mug / c1810 /£325" Condition: Some staining on the body of the mug; scratches to the exterior of the mug.
