Description:
Silk shawl made from polychrome silk embroidery on an off-white crepe silk ground. The design features densely placed floral and animal motifs embroidered in colorful, bright silk thread. All four sides are edged with long (21") fringe. The cover is an important example of the kinds of 19th-century textiles made in China for Western markets, including New England. Such imported goods not only were desirable for their fashoinably "exotic" connotations, but also meshed well with western dress styles and home decoration of the period.
