Description:
Round, cylindrical tinned sheet iron bowl with a tapered base and applied, slightly flaring foot rim, the bowl is composed of a sheet of iron that is seamed on the side, there is a turned over rim (perhaps with a strengthening wire inside) on both the bowl and lid, the lid is round with an inner flange and tightly curled metal finial, the lid is a friction mount that sits flush to the surface, the exterior of the sugar bowl is painted with a ground coating of brownish black asphaltum which has darkened over time, painted enamels in green, yellow and red decorate the lid and the sides of the bowl, the lid has a series of repeating comma motifs with some red flowers, and the sides has large red stylized flowers with more yellow comma motifs, the interior of the bowl is very rusty, there is some flaking of the paint, and perhaps enhancement of the painted decoration at a later time.
