Description:
Molded yellowware match holder with a flat panel back and an attached, protruding container for matches, the panel has a round hole in the upper section for hanging on the wall, the piece is shapes along the edge in rounded s and c scrolls, the front of the match container has a floral rococo scroll motif molded on the front, on the center of the back panel appears to be a hunting dog and his prey – perhaps a game bird, covered all over in a brown Rockingham glaze, red and white paper label attached to the reverse reads: J.E. Jeffords & Co./ Phila/Penn” and the number “188b” in red enamel. Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Gates notecard for this object for #188b reads, "Wall or hanging soap dish. Rockingham, Raised decoration. 5 3/4" x 4 1/4" x 3/4"/ hole to hang on nail/ made ibid. [meaning John E. Jeffords & Co.]/ Bot. Ibid. [meaning W. Boger, Old Park? Store]"
