Description:
Small, circular thrown red earthenware dish, with flat well and canted sides, rim is slightly rolled, well is decorated with white slip in three rows - pattern is a loop, then a squiggly line, then a loop; surface of dish has a slightly spotted, mottled green appearance to the glaze with the addition of manganese decoration. Back of dish The reverse of this dish is unglazed, there is a red painted number of "58." and "Col. 1905/Conn. Putnam." This object was originally in the collection of Burton N. Gates. Original Gates' notecard has been lost. Brandon copied notecard reads: "Cup and Saucer (Porringer and small pan)/ Red Clay pottery/ Putnam, Ct. Col. 1905/ Splash decoration on cup; slip on saucer, variation/ in color. (purchased Feb. 5, 1967) [by William Brandon]/ Note: March, 1973; card lost or misplaced. Above/ notes found in other card. cf. over) Condition: There is a chip to the side of the dish.
