Description:
Oval-shaped, drape molded dish or platter with coggled rim; decorated on the interior with marbleized slips of white and brown allover the surface, the underside of the dish is unglazed, painted in red with the number "165" in a circle, This object was originally in the collection of Burton N. Gates. Notecard from the Gates papers reads: "Oval platter, Red clay. Slip decoration incised edge. 14"/ yellow & black slip/ Col. 1912 Vandyke who bought in Provincetown, Ms." Condition: Extremely dirty, severe glaze losses on the top surface, glaze abrasions, glaze crackle, loss, and lifting in areas, large oval loss on underside of the dish. Current attribution provided by American ceramics scholar Justin Thomas, 1/16/2019.
