Description:
Cake molds are among the most common types of redware. They are usually circular, with a central column. Used primarily for sponge cake, such pieces were often slip cast and given a clear or manganese splotched lead glaze. This example has been thrown on a wheel. Large thrown redware bowl with conical point in the center; inner surface of redware dish is lead glazed and also decorated with colored slips in bands on the interior of the bowl, on the curved rim of the bowl is a wavy band of slip, the conical portion is dotted randomly with slip; having orange glaze with slip decoration. Condition: Surface of the dish is dirty and greasy from use, broken in several pieces. Conserved at the Williamstown Art Conservation Center in 2015.
