Description:
Thrown, salt-glazed stoneware inkwell, circular form with flat base, straight sides, and flat top, top has central hole, and three side holes, the top of well is impressed with a design of a lozenge or diamond with two tassels on either side, faint blue color in the decoration, inscribed on the bottom of the piece in red paint, “73.” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. The original Gates notecard for this object reads: "Ink well./ col. vicinity of Ithaca.? stoneware: salt glaze. 3 quill holes./ Incised mark [drawing of mark on top of inkwell]"
