Description:
Tall, thrown, red earthenware storage jar, circular flat bottom, molded base edge, straight sides, angled shoulders, and cup shaped lip to hold a lid (which does not survive), decorated on the edge of the shoulder with incised bands, covered with an orange lead glaze, and oval sponged decoration of manganese on the sides of the pot, Inscribed in red paint on bottom, “100”, Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original Gates notecard for object reads, "Crock and cover. / Col. 1912. Willimantic, Ct. Red clay splash decoration. 10.5 x 5 in diam." Current attribution provided by American ceramics scholar Justin Thomas, 1/16/2019.
