Description:
Thrown, salt-glazed stoneware jar with ovoid shape, circular, grooved bottom, turned bottom edge, narrow base, swelled, bulbous sides, narrow neck with rounded edge to rim, incised decoration on upper side of jar is a six-leaf floral design enhanced with cobalt blue, on the opposite side is a larger floral leafy incised design with five large leaves enhanced with cobalt blue, these designs could possibly be a variant on a fleur-de-lis, inscribed on bottom in ink, “EKM?” Condition: there is a large crack extending about 5 inches long from the rim through the body of the jar. A similarly decorated stoneware churn - with slightly smaller decoration - sold at Crocker Farm Auction, Sparks, MD, March 14, 2015, lot 71 and was marked "Swan & States/Stonington'
