Description:
Stoneware barrel with incised floral and bird decoration, base is repaired and repair is flaking off, Thrown, barrel-shaped keg with hollow interior and a hole on the top, attached to a flaring foot or stem; keg is decorated with three turned bands on both ends, and a pair of turned bands in the middle, the center bands are decorated in cobalt blue, in addition, there is incised and stamped decoration on the top of the keg, at the top are a pair of flowers, then a herringbone design punctuated by stamped circles, and on the other side are two bird facing each other as they perch on branches, all of these decorations are enhanced with cobalt blue, the side of the keg has an incised floral design of two flowers and four leaves decorated in cobalt blue, there is also a hole on the side of the keg, the flared base has a molded collar where it attaches to the keg, it is also decorated with cobalt blue, the base of the stand has been repaired in the past with some sort of putty or plaster and overpainted, the repairs have failed and the paint has darkened over time (this object has since been conserved), the interior of the stand is darker brown in color – perhaps from receiving less oxygen during the firing. There are flakes of iron oxide in the clay.
