Description:
Mugs were produced in great quantity by every pottery, yet today few survive, probably due to rough handling in taverns and public houses. Thrown, red earthenware cylindrical shaped mug, with flat bottom, turned lower edge, straight sides, large circular mouth, and applied ribbed strap handle, the mug has orange glaze sponged with manganese decoration on the upper half of the mug, inscribed on the bottom in red paint, “199” in a circle, and a white and red paper label reads, “ Col. By Osborn/ Phila 1914/ Schuylkill Valley” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original Gates notecard for this object reads, "Pitcher. Red clay. Dark Green to yellow edge glaze. 8" x 4 1/2" base/ Col. by Osborn (Dec. 1914) Phil, Schuylkill Valley."
