Description:
Bellied mug with flaring lip and pronounced belly, narrow circular base, exaggerated attached strap handle, decorated in the Imari palette of underglaze blue, overglaze red, and gilding, decoration consists of a large peony-like flower with branches and leaves, a gnarled rock with holes, and a bird perched on the branch in a brown or sepia colored enamel, elements of the design are picked out in gilding, the rim of the foot has decoration in a repeating spearhead-like border, on the underside of the mug, there is a modern paper label for "Guest & Gray" and "01019", there is a hole on the underside of the handle to let out steam during firing. Condition: Small chip to base.
