Description:
Extensive Chinese export porcelain tea and coffee service with gilt trim of 64 pieces, all pieces bearing the initials "JP" for John Perkins in a wreath; coarse porcelain body and glaze with unglazed foot rims; set consists of the following pieces, coffeepot, two teapots, undertray or teapot stand, sugar bowl, cream pot, waste bowl, tea canister, 12 tea cups (smaller size) and 10 corresponding saucers, 12 breakfast cups (larger size), 13 breakfast saucers, 2 shallow dishes (cake plates), 1 dish with everted rim (probably a stand for the sugar bowl), and 7 flat plates. Condition: some cups are broken and need conservation, one breakfast cup, two tea cups, and the waste bowl need repair. Examples from the service show black specks in the glaze. This could be an indication of overfiring or refiring the object to enhance enamels or gilding.
