Description:
Thrown cylindrical redware pitcher with applied strap handle with three ribs, small pinched spout on rim; jug is decorated with 5 tooled bands at the shoulders of the pot - the middle band is the largest , and 4 tooled bands at the base of the jug, the jug has the appearance of a hooped barrel, the pot has an orange ground color with manganese splashes at the rim, the base of the pot is flat and unglazed, pencil inscription on bottom of jug reads: "Col. 1918/ By Daw... or Dav...?/ Uxbridge/ Uxbridge/ Mass." Origin: Bristol County, Massachusetts, c. 1810. Condition: there are some glaze chips to the rim of the piece, a large hairline crack is in the body beneath the spout and travels into the base, Presumed to be part of the Burton N. Gates Collection.
