Description:
These redware pieces, whose form mimics the common stoneware crocks of the period, are rare. Thrown, straight-sided, wide mouthed redware crock or jar with two applied lug handles at each side, an inch under the rim is a raised rib encircling the pot; the object is glazed on the interior and exterior with lead glaze and infrequent splashes of magnanese, the color of the body is dark orange with blackish brown manganese spots, inscribed in pencil on the base of the object: Col. 19??/ Yarmouth/ Cape Cod." Condition: good condition, a lot of glaze wear along the top rim and on the lug handles, Presumed to be part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Current attribution provided by American ceramics scholar Justin Thomas, 1/16/2019.
