Description:
Circular plate with underglaze blue band on outer border and inner border of rim; repeating decoration on rim alternating ib green and red of s-scroll with a foliate design above and below; center of plate has a hand-painted underglaze blue decoration in a bold leafy pattern in a circle; on top of that design are sponge-decorated designs in red and green enamel of large and small flowers, on the back of the plate blue decoration has "jumped" from the other plates in the stack within the saggar; this is an example of so-called “stick spatter” decoration. The term “stick spatter” refers to ceramics that feature repetitive designs applied with a cut sponge mounted on the end of a stick to enable continual application on the same piece. They include hand-painted decoration along with cut-sponge designs.
