Description:
Acquired from a Pennsylvania auction house (Pook & Pook) on the basis of form and decoration (but lacking ownership history), this architectural clothes press is a rare survival. It is important as a document of clothing storage using pegs rather than shelves, possibly originally in a public building such as a meeting house or court house; it documents the use of hanging pegs rather than shelves for clothing storage; and it relates exterior architectural decoration to interior spaces with its pulvinated frieze, fluted pilasters topped with carved rosettes and center keystone plinth that carries through all of the molding courses--design elements that correspond to Connecticut River Valley door surrounds (minus the broken-scroll pediment). It was probably capped with a projecting molded dentil course as was common on Connecticut River Valley door surrounds.
