Description:
Tinned sheet iron, six-sided lantern with five sides with glass. The front panel has rectangular piece of glass with a metal latch (may be a later replacement) on the left and a hinge on the right; the side panels (both wide and narrow) of glass have a metal surround with decorative sawtooth edges on the interior; and the metal at the base has round punch marks for decoration. The interior of the lantern has a coiled cylinder of tin for a candle socket; there are small s-shaped vents on the top of the lantern and on the collar of the flue; the flue cap is a curved piece of metal. The strap handle has wrapped wire for strength on the sides and a piece of metal at the arch of the handle for more support and strength, The lantern was at one time painted black and there is an all over coating of rust, the front panel of glass has a bubble defect. Before acquisition by the museum - the lantern was repaired by Don Carpentier of Eastfield Village, East Nassau, New York.
