Description:
Circular fused plate or Sheffield plate or fused plate presentation tray, which is part of a group (HD 2006.8.1-8.4), inscribed "S.C. Co. / to / J.C./ Jany 1846" in the center encircled with an elaborate engraved shells, baskets, and leaves design; a cast rim in a floral and leaf pattern; and supported on three cast floral feet. John Chase was the brilliant engineer of the Springfield Canal Company. Working with a team of Irish-American laborers, he built railroads, canals, and buildings in the town of Cabotville (now Chicopee), Massachusetts, for wealthy Boston investors. He raised stoneworks and laid out many street plans, to the point that he was known as the "Father of Cabotville." His work essentially made the Chicopee/Springfield area an industrial and manufacturing powerhouse, and through the firms of Ames and J. Stevens and Company - a major supplier to the Union armies. In 2006, the Boston silver dealer Bruce Cherner advertised a coin silver presentation water pticher and covered butter dish, both by Lincoln & Reed, which are part of the same1846 presentation group. Condition: In parts some of the copper is showing through, on the back side the engraving has produced a shadow decoration. Conserved and cleaned 3/13/2009.
