Description:
Powder horn inscribed: “John Tribble: of / Lyme: His: Horn Made: At: / Fort . Edward: September / ye 5th A.::.D 1758 / Don’t. Take. This: Horn. For. Fear. Of / Shame. for. on. it. Stands. Ye. owners name.”
Horn carvers were apparently aware of one another’s work, especially after the summer campaigns of the mid-1750s. The talented “Lyme Carver” combined the styles of “J.W.” (winged serifs, deeply incised decoration) and Jacob Gay (animals). Often his work also includes dots to enliven his carving in a rapid style. John Tribble was apparently from Lyme in southeastern Connecticut, and served between 1755 and 1762 when he disappeared in the Caribbean during the Havana campaign.
