Description:
English delft punch bowl with deep sides and applied foot rim, decorated in cobalt blue on the interior and exterior of bowl. The interior has a small circle in the well and a fence and flower decoration on the upper side, and an insect and grape-like branch. The exterior has a similar decoration of flower, running fence with a thick post, and an insect. This punch bowl can be turned upside-down when stored, and the insects then fly over the foliage. Traditional eighteenth-century recipes for punch included five ingredients: spirits (rum, brandy, or arrack), citrus (lime, orange, or lemon), spices, sugar, and water. Punch could either be ladled into wineglasses or drunk directly from the bowl. The owner's label on the base reads "B-112/AOE"; and a small typewritten label reads:' "Exhibited at the Stamford Museum 9/88".
