Description:
English or American ironstone plate, an example of a type of ceramic called spatterware. It was produced almost exclusively for the American market and included sponged decoration. With its transfer printed American eagle, this object was designed to appeal to the American taste. The twelve-sided plate has a subtly paneled rim and flat well; the rim is decorated with underglaze blue sponging; and the well is transfer-printed in blue an American eagle, three arrows, and shield with thirteen stars. An alternative manufacturer could be the American Pottery Co., Jersey City, New Jersey, 19th Century.
