Description:
Silver bow-type sugar tongs with bright-cut decoration and snake edges, and small oval cups, which is marked "JA" in script in a rectangle on the inside of each grip for Joseph Anthony Jr. (1762-1814). Joseph Anthony's parents were Joseph and Elizabeth Anthony of a prosperous mercantile family from Newport, Rhode Island, who moved to Philadelphia in 1782. Joseph Anthony Jr. started advertising in Philadelphia in 1783, and was listed in Philadelphia directories from 1785-1809, and as J. Anthony & Sons from 1810-1814.
