Description:
One of two English pearlware mugs with a handle, in blue, brown, green, and yellow, with the inscription commemorating "AMERICA INDEPENDENT 1776". HD 76.019 is smaller version of these mugs, made to be sold as a fiftieth anniversary of American independence. The cylindrical mug has a blue-edged rim over a plain molded band; over a band of flowers in blue, yellow, and green; over the impressed inscription outlined by two molded bands; over grouping of three vertical, swirled blue bands ending in a blue band; over a molded flat base. The applied, scrolled handle has pinched terminals and blue foliate decoration. Similar mugs were sold with the inscription for "Winchester Measure Warranted," c. 1825.
