Description:
Circular plate, with transfer printed decoration in underglaze blue, made in Staffordshire, England. Pattern is "Nuneham Courtney" or "Wild Rose." Border has roses, central decoration is a man in a boat on a small lake, with a thatched farm house on the right. This popular pattern "Wild Rose" is discussed in Coysh and Henrywood The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880 Vol. I, Woodbridge, Suffolk: Baron Publishing (1982),on pp. 309-311 with a listing of many of the potteries that produced the pattern. The pattern is based on a print by S. Owen of Nuneham Courtney, Bridge and Cottage, c. 1811.
