Description:
One of two silver salt spoons with a fiddle-end handle, which is marked "OAKES" in an irregular rectangle and with an eagle in an oval attributed to Frederick Oakes, Sr. (1782-1855), and engraved with the initial "W" in script on the front of the handle. Frederick Oakes had three sons: Henry (b.1806) bought out his father's business in 1830 and worked as a silversmith and watchmaker from 1830-1840 when he moved to Nyack, NY; and his brothers William (b.1812) and Frederick ((1815-1869) took over the business after Henry left. This is one of the objects (HD 89.019-89.032) purchased from Richard Arms (1928-2007) of Deerfield, a descendent of the Arms family of Deerfield.
