Description:
Portrait of Mary Conkling Wells (1709-1780) done in pastel on paper attributed to William Williams III, which is inscribed on the reverse, "W,W, Pinct. Newyork 1775 / Price L.1.2s.6d." The daughter of Captain Cornelius Conkling, Mary married Obadiah Wells at East Hampton, Long Island, NY, in 1736; the family were among the first settlers of Brattleboro, Vermont, where she died. Obadiah them moved with his son, Dr. Henry Wells, to Montague, Mass., where Obadiah died in 1800. Dr. Henry Wells owned a set of Windsor chairs made by James and John Always of NYC, HD 84.019.
