Description:
Staffordshire six-footed teapot (see sugar bowl, HD 90.085) with a domed cover with a large bulbous knop, squat, bulbous body, S-shaped spout, and C-scroll handle, which is decorated with dark blue, transfer-printed large flowers and berries popular in America. The pot was made by the Union Pottery Factory, a short-lived potters' cooperative in Burslem. The EH Williams 1838 probate inventory listed: "2 Tea pots Blue ... .67." The Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association has two similar teapots. One was a gift from George Sheldon in 1889, that came with the label: "Blue teapot - Bought by Caroline (Stebbins) Sheldon about 1830 with money inherited from her aunt Abigail Sratton, who died in 1826. She died Dec. 1 1865." The same Union Pottery teapot, cup and saucer, and breakfast plate are listed in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Assocation Relics of the Memorial Hall Museum catalogue (#82,83,84) as "Blue Six-legged Teapot Belonged to Caroline (Stebbins) Sheldon 1789-1865, mother of donor, George Sheldon." The other, a gift of Dr. Marion Rockwell of Amherst, Massachusetts, came with the label: "Carried by a pioneer from Massachusetts to New Hampshire in her saddle bag." Union Pottery pieces in HD's collection include: HD 90.025 (cream pot), HD 90.084 (teapot), 90.085 (sugar bowl), and 96.046 (3 sets of teacups and saucers).
